悬梁刺股

In the Eastern Han Dynasty, a man named Sun Jing was a famous politician. As a young man, he was diligent in study and often forgot eating and sleeping. When he was reading, he tied his hair to the roof beam with a rope. Therefore, when he dozed, he would feel pain and wake up as his hair was pulled upward by the rope, so that he would go on studying.

Su Qin in the Warring States Period was another example like Sun Jing. He felt sleepy when he was reading, so he took an awl and stabbed it into his own legs. Thus, the sudden pain would wake him up, and he could continue reading.

东汉时，有一个叫孙敬的年轻人，孜孜不倦勤奋好学，从早读到晚很少休息，有时候到了三更半夜的时候很容易打盹，为了不影响学习，孙敬想出一个办法，他找来一根绳子，一头绑在自己的头发上，另一头绑在房子的房梁上，这样读书疲劳打瞌睡的时候只要头一低，绳子牵住头发扯痛头皮，他就会因疼痛而清醒起来再继续读书。

战国时期的苏秦是一个有名的政治家，但是他在年轻的时候学问并不多，到了好多地方都没有人关注，即使有雄心壮志也得不到重用，于是他下定决心发奋图强努力读书。由于他经常读书读到深夜，疲倦到想要打盹的时候就用事先准备好的锥子往大腿上刺一下，这样突然的痛感使他猛然清醒起来，振作精神继续读书。

Once upon a time, there was a thief saw a doorbell hanging on the neighbour’s door. He wanted to steal it.

But he knew that bell would ring as soon as he touched it. And then he would be discovered.

He thought: Only using ears can hear the sound. What if I cover my ears? Then the sound would not be heard anymore.

Whereupon he covered his own ears and tried to steal the bell. However, he was discovered immediately when he touched the bell.

从前有一个人，看见人家大门上挂着一个铃铛，想把它偷走。

他知道，那个铃铛只要用手一碰，就会丁零丁零地响起来，被人发觉。他想：“响声要用耳朵才能听见，如果把耳朵掩起来，不是就听不见了吗？”于是，他掩住了自己的耳朵，伸手去偷那个铃铛。谁知手刚碰到铃铛，他就被人发觉了。

Kuang Heng was born in a poor family. He liked reading books very much. He needed to work at daytime, so he had to read books during night. But he was too poor to buy a candle.

One day, he found his neighbour had candles, but the light couldn’t go through his room. So he dug a small hole on the wall so that he could use the light to read books. From that day, he read books every night until the light went out.

However, he finished reading all his books and there were no books for him to read. Then he went to a rich man’s house and worked for him without payment. The rich man asked: “ Why don’t you want the money?” Kuang Heng said: “ Because I only want to borrow your books.” The rich man agreed. Kuang Heng read the books one by one.

Finally, he became a great scholar.

匡衡勤奋好学，但家中没有蜡烛。邻家有蜡烛，但光亮照不到他家，匡衡就在墙壁上凿了洞引来邻家的光亮，让光亮照在书上读书。

县里有个大户人家不怎么识字，但家中富有，有很多书。匡衡就到他家去做雇工，但不要报酬。

主人感到很奇怪，问他为什么这样，他说：“我希望读遍主人家的书。”主人听了，深为感叹，就借给匡衡书。于是匡衡成了一位伟大的学者。

Zu Ti of the Jin Dynasty was very clever and talent. When he was young, he had a good friend named Liu Kun. They had a deep friendship. So they stayed together every day. Furthermore, they even slept on one bed every night and got up at the same time every morning.

One day, when they were sleeping, Zu Ti heard the rooster crowing, he woke up Liu Kun and said: How about getting up to play swordsas soon as we heard the rooster crowing from now on? Liu Kun was still sleepy. But he agreed with him joyfully. From then on, they got up and played swords once the rooster began crowing. They kept their words and never gave up no matter how cold in winter or hot in summer.

A few years later, they both grew up with great talent and wisdom. And they both did excellent job to their country.

晋朝的祖逖非常的聪明有才华。在他年幼的时候，他有一个好朋友刘琨。他们情感深厚，每天都待在一起。他们甚至每晚都睡在一张床上，每天早上一起起床。

有一天，祖逖在睡梦中听到公鸡打鸣的声音，他把刘琨叫醒对他说：从今天起，我们听到公鸡打鸣就起来舞剑如何？刘琨尚有困意，但他还是欣然答应了。从那以后，他们就约定每天公鸡一打鸣就起来舞剑。他们信守承诺，无论寒冬酷暑，从未放弃。几年之后，他们都成长为才华和智慧兼备的人。尽忠尽责地报效祖国。

这个故事告诉我们：有志报国的人会及时奋起。

Where there is a will, there is a way.

One day, a tiger was hungry. The tiger met a fox and wanted to eat it.

“How dare you eat me?!” the fox shouted.

“Why not?” the tiger asked.

“ I am sent by god to rule all the animals! I am the king of animals! If you eat me, you will defy the order of heaven!” the fox said.

The tiger said:“ I don’t believe you! You must be lying!”

The fox said:“ If you don’t believe me, you can walk behind me and go to the forest with me. Then, you can see all the animals are scared and run away when they see me.”

So, the tiger followed the fox, going to the forest. As soon as the animals saw them, they fled for their lives.

The tiger didn’t realize it was him that all the animals were really afraid of.

从前在某个山洞中有一只老虎，因为肚子饿了，便跑到外面寻觅食物。它碰到了一只狐狸，狐狸刚要溜走，已被它一把捉住。狡猾的狐狸看见自己无法逃脱，就耍了一个花招。它一本正经地斥责老虎说：“你怎么敢吃我?我是天帝任命来管理所有的野兽的，你要吃了我，就是违抗天帝的命。”老虎一听愣住了。狐狸马上接着说：“你要是不信，就跟在我后面走一趟，看看是不是所有的野兽见了我都赶快逃命。”老虎听狐狸说话的口气很大，态度也很强硬，有几分相信了，决定跟着狐狸去看看。有许多小动物正在那儿争相觅食，但是当它们发现走在狐狸后面的老虎时，不禁大惊失色，狂奔四散。老虎以为百兽真的害怕狐狸而不知道是害怕自己，于是就把狐狸给放了。

There were two mountains between Jizhou in the south and Heyang in the north. Both of them were very high. An old man, called Mr. Fool, lived in the north of the mountain with his family. He was nearly ninety years old. Because of these two high mountains, the whole family had to walk a long way from one side to the other side of the mountains.

One day, Mr. Fool called all his family together to talk about moving the two mountains to other place. All of them agreed. So it was decided. His children started to dig the mountains with him.

The next day, a man called Smart came and said: “ Why did you do that? These two mountains are so high and you are so old and weak! How can you move the mountains?” Mr. Fool laughed and said: “It’s not difficult at all! Look! Those two mountains are still there, but I have my children, and my children will have their children, generations after generations, there’s no end. I believe someday the mountains will be moved.”

相传古时候有两座大山，一座叫太行山，一座叫王屋山。那里的北山住着一位老人名叫愚公，快90岁了。他每次出门，都因被这两座大山阻隔，要绕很大的圈子，才能到南方去。一天，他把全家人召集起来，说：“我准备与你们一起，用毕生的精力来搬掉太行山和王屋山，修一条通向南方的大道。你们说好吗！” 大家都表示赞成。于是，愚公带着儿孙们开始挖山。虽然一家人每天挖不了多少，但他们还是坚持挖。直到换季节的时候，才回家一次。有个名叫智叟的老人得知这件事后，特地来劝愚公说：“你这样做太不聪明了，凭你这有限的精力，又怎能把这两座山挖平呢？”愚公回答说：“怎么不可能！这又有什么难的？即使有一天我死了，还有我的儿子在这里。儿子死了，还有孙子，孙子又生孩子，孩子又生儿子。子子孙孙是没有穷尽的，而山却不会再增高，为什么挖不平呢？” 当时山神见愚公他们挖山不止，便向上帝报告了这件事。上帝被愚公的精神感动，派了两个大力神下凡，把两座山背走。从此，这里不再有高山阻隔了。

There was a frog living in a narrow well. He never went out of the well but he lived a happy life under the well. In his opinion, the sky is just as big as the mouth of the well.

One day, a crow came to the well and saw the frog. The frog asked: “Where are you from?” Then the crow said: “I come from far away, and I have flown more than one hundred li. Now I am so tired and thirsty.”

“Really? Are you kidding me? The sky is only as big as the mouth of the well. How can you fly over one hundred li?”

The frog was very surprised and said. The crow heard that and laughed: “Exactly! The sky is endless. But you always stay in the well, so you don’t know how big the sky is.”

However the frog still didn’t believe in the crow. The crow said: “You can come out of the well and have a look by yourself!” In the end, the frog jumped out of the well and he was really stunned by the size of the sky! He was ashamed and said: “I am just a frog under the well!”

从前有只青蛙，他一直生活在狭小的的井下。尽管他从未出去到井的外面，但他依旧生活得十分开心。在这只青蛙眼中，天空就是井口那么大。

一天，一只乌鸦飞来，落在井沿上。青蛙问乌鸦：“你从哪儿飞来呀？” 乌鸦回答道：“我从很远的地方飞来，已经在天空中飞了一百多里，现在又累又渴，想找点水喝。” 青蛙听了，不以为然，笑道：“朋友,别说大话了！天不过井口那么大，还用飞那么远吗?” 乌鸦说道：“你弄错了，天无边无际，大得很哪！” 青蛙笑了，说：“我天天坐在井里，一抬头就看见天。我不会弄错的.” 小鸟也笑了，说：”朋友，你是弄错了。不相信，你跳出井口来看一看吧。”

揠苗助长

Once upon a time, there was a farmer, who was always worried about the growth of his crops. Everyday he went to see them.

But the crops grew much slower than he expected. He was so anxious after three days’ watch in his fields.

Then he said to himself: I must find a better way to help them grow faster.

At last, a good idea came up to his mind. Then he rushed towards the fields. For the whole day, he was there to pull each crop upward. He worked hard till the sunset. Then he came home, exhausted.

He couldn’t wait to tell his family the great thing he had done in the daytime. But he was so tired that he was out of breath. “I am exhausted, but you know, my efforts were not in vain, I helped all the little crops grow faster. It’s worth it.” the farmer said joyfully and he even couldn’t help laughing loudly.

However, his son found something wrong. He ran to the fields in a hurry, but it was too late when he find that all the crops died back.

This story tells us things would be worse if we make them happen speedily without following the developing rules of them.

古时候有个人，希望自己田里的禾苗长的快点，天天到田边去看。可是，一天、两天、三天，禾苗好像一点也没有长高。他就在田边焦急的转来转去，自言自语的说：“我得想个办法帮它们长。”一天，他终于想到了办法，就急忙跑到田里，把禾苗一棵一棵往高里拔。从中午一直忙到太阳落山，弄得精疲力尽。当他回到家里时，一边喘气一边对儿子说：“可把我累坏了，力气没白费，禾苗都长了一大截。”

他的儿子不明白是怎么回事，跑到田里一看，发现禾苗都枯死了。

Mencius’s mother is a great mother of Zou State. To make her son get a good education, she moved her family three times.

When Mencius was a child, he lived near a graveyard. Therefore, he often played near the grave and imitated people’s crying or digging the tombs. When his mother saw this, she said: “It’s not a good place for a child to live in.”

Then she moved the family to a house near a market. Soon Mencius began imitating people’s hawking and bargaining. He found it interesting and played again and again. His mother found this place still not good for a child to live in. She decided to move away again.

At last they settled down near a school. Before long, Mencius began imitating the students’ reading and writing. He became more polite and hardworking. Then his mother said: this is a good place for a child to live in.

When Mencius grew up, he was well-known for his politeness and talent.

This story tells us a good educational environment is very important for children.

孟母是战国时期邹县一位伟大的妈妈。他为了孩子得到好的教育，搬了三次家。

孟子小的时候住的地方与墓地离得很近，因此，他经常在墓地附近玩。孟子就学人哭嚎或者挖墓。孟子的妈妈看到了这个现象之后，就说道：“这个地方不适合孩子居住。”

于是，孟子的妈妈带着孟子搬到市集旁边去住。很快，孟子学人吆喝、讨价还价。他觉得很有意思，就反反复复玩。孟子的妈妈发现这个地方还是不适合孩子居住，于是，她决定再次搬家。

最后，他们在学堂附近定居下来。不久，孟子开始模仿学生读、写。他变得更有礼貌和勤奋。并且跟着先生一起学习。这个时候，孟子的妈妈说：“这才是孩子应该居住的地方呀!”

当孟子长大后，因谦逊和才华而闻名。

这个故事告诉我们好的教育环境对孩子是非常重要的!

Sun Shan was a popular person in Song Dynasty. Everybody liked him very much because he was not only knowledgeable but also humorous.

One day, Sun Shan went to take the imperial exam with a fellow villager’s son. Finally, Sun Shan passed the exam. So he returned to his hometown happily.

After Sun Shan returned home, the fellow villager asked him whether his son had also passed.

Sun Shan said: “Sun Shan was the last on the list. And your son came after Sun Shan.”

宋朝时候，有个名叫孙山的才子，人聪明也很诙谐，别人都称他是“滑稽才子”。有一次，他和同乡的儿子一同去赶考。考试完毕，等到张榜公布的那一天，孙山紧张地站在那儿仔细地寻找自己的名字，终于在最后看到了自己的大名，他喜出望外的大声嚷嚷：“我中啦！我中啦！”然后，连夜赶回家里报喜讯。

那位同乡见孙山回来，而他的儿子却没有一同回家，便赶到孙山家里来问情况。同乡人问：“我儿子考中了吗？”孙山幽默地回答道：“解名尽处是孙山，贤郎更在孙山外。”
